How It Works

Getting Your Construction Card

Whether you're entering the industry or advancing your career, here's the general pathway to getting your UK construction card.

1. Identify Your Card

Determine which construction card applies to your trade or role. Most site workers need a CSCS card, but specialisms like electrical, plumbing, or plant operation have their own dedicated schemes.

2. Pass the HS&E Test

Almost every card requires you to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. Choose the right version for your occupation — operative, specialist, manager, or professional.

3. Gain Your Qualifications

Complete the relevant NVQ/SVQ or training programme for your specific trade. Your qualification level determines which colour card you're eligible for.

4. Apply & Renew

Submit your application to the relevant card scheme. Most cards are valid for 5 years, after which you'll need to renew — keeping your skills and safety knowledge current.
